If you've ever been tormented by a stubborn yeast infection, you've no doubt heard all kinds of homespun advice about sure-fire cures from well-meaning friends and family, including some that sound more than a little bit crazy or dangerous. Curing a yeast infection can be a frustrating, confusing task, but a few safe and natural steps are worth trying.
What works for one person might not help another. Often it takes a certain amount of trial and error to learn what works for you. Here are a few of the more popular home remedies:
- Probiotic Yogurt: Yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a microorganism that kills off yeast. Not all yogurts contain enough lactobacillus acidophilus to make a dent in an active yeast infection though, and some popular yogurts are so full of sugar and additives they can actually make matters worse. Look for an organic yogurt at a whole foods or health food store that is marked as probiotic or as containing probiotic cultures. Include at least eight ounces a day in your diet. Don't use the yogurt internally; instead, while your infection is active, look for probiotic capsules or suppositories (available in most health food stores) and take as directed. Once the infection is under control, continue with your daily serving or probiotic yogurt.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is great stuff but it is really, really strong. Don't use it internally. It will kill the yeast, but it will also sting like nothing you can possibly imagine. Instead, try adding half a cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath and soaking in it daily, and adding two teaspoons to a glass or water and drinking it each morning. If you don't like the taste, you can sprinkle two teaspoons on salad or greens once daily instead. Apple cider vinegar helps all manner of minor complaints and has even been shown to aid in weight loss.
- Garlic: Many women swear by garlic tablets (the kind you buy in the vitamin section of any pharmacy as an oral supplement) inserted directly into the vagina once an hour. Garlic is hostile to yeast, and a bottle of garlic tablets is not expensive or dangerous in any way, so this natural remedy is affordable and worth a try. You should get relief almost instantly, so if it's been a day or two and you're still miserable and still inserting garlic tablets on the hour, you can safely move on to something else.
- Boric Acid: You'll find this one all over the internet, but be warned: boric acid can be dangerous. While it's true that some pharmacies will make you up some boric acid suppositories and to kill yeast, you need to know that boric acid can burn the skin when applied topically, or cause pain and damage to any cut or lesion you might have. Boric acid must never be taken internally and never be used for longer than the recommended period (usually 14 days). Scientific studies have shown that 600mg suppositories of boric acid used for 14 days were more effective in eliminating yeast infections than either oral or topical antifungal prescription drugs. Look for a boric acid product specifically designed for yeast infections (such as Yeast Arrest by Vitanica) and use as directed.
- Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is a potent antiseptic that is widely available in pharmacies and health food stores. It has a pleasant smell and is effective in killing all kinds of germs. While no studies have been done on tee tree oil as a treatment for yeast infections, some women report relief when using tee tree oil topically, like an ointment, to ease the discomfort that comes with a yeast infection.
- Oil of Oregano: Oil of Oregano is actually an herbal supplement that is meant to be taken internally. Look for capsule that has a high carvacrol content (it should be near the beginning of the listed ingredients), and take daily by mouth according to directions.
Switching to cotton underwear and looser more lightweight jeans, eating less sugar and processed food and more fresh vegetables and lean meat, reducing stress, and cutting alcohol and cigarettes out of your life are all long term changes that will help keep your immune system strong and yeast infections a thing of the past.
