Preparing food on the candida diet is not difficult, and you don't have to remember a lot of complicated recipes or exotic ingredients. In fact, cooking and eating on the candida diet is much easier and much more delicious that how most people cook day in and day out. Just remember a few basic principals and you'll be well on your way to healthful eating, with or without recipes.
If you're just starting out, here are some basics that can serve as a pretty steady guide:
- Print out a list of foods to eat and foods to avoid. Foods to include all organic lean meats and fish; organic unsweetened Greek yogurt; bananas, oranges, berries, and lemons in limited quantities (once a day, no more), dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, chard, kale, and lettuce; cucumbers and celery; radishes and turnips; green and other brightly colored peppers; cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts; green beans and asparagus; eggplant; okra; and algae and seaweed like Spirulina and chlorella. Avoid fatty and processed or smoked meats and fish; any canned or frozen ready-to-eat meal; canned vegetables and fruits; fast food; most bottled condiments including salad dressing; alcohol and cigarettes; aged cheeses, chocolate, nuts, and mushrooms.
- Eat frequent small meals instead of one or two large ones. You should be eating at least three times a day with two or more healthy snacks, or you can choose to eat five to seven mini-meals instead. Don't go more than three hours without eating, or your blood sugar will plunge and you will be hit by unhealthy cravings to get your energy level back up. Frequent meals keep you on track and prevent unhealthy choices.
- Meat and vegetables should be equal, allowed starches very small. Most people load up on meat and starch and barely eat any vegetables. On the candida diet you want to make your portion of meat and your portion of vegetables equal. Take out a small plate. The meat should take up half the plate, the lightly steamed veggies the other half. Any allowed starches should be mixed in sparingly: a tablespoon or two per meal, like you would use a condiment.
- Keep it simple. Don't load up your meat and vegetables with oil and spices at first. Cook the meat on medium high with a small bit of oil in a fry pan, or broil or bake it. Steam your vegetables very lightly or eat them raw. Try to get used to the actual flavors of the food in its natural state before you start heaping seasonings on them. Most of our food is over-seasoned and over-salted. Once you get used to how things really taste, you can experiment with herbs, lemon juice, and home made dressings.
- Buy organic. Yes it costs a bit more, but it's worth it. You are doing this to rid your body of toxins and keep it healthy, so it makes no sense to buy fresh produce that has been doused in chemicals and pesticides before it ever got to the supermarket. Many local markets and health food stores also now sell organic beef, chicken, and even buffalo.
- Eat yogurt at breakfast instead of milk. You can apply the same general ratios you use with meat and vegetables to yogurt and allowed fruits and starch. Mix one part organic unsweetened yogurt with one part allowed fruit (like banana) and sprinkle in organic allowed grains like oats in a smaller proportion (one or two tablespoons). No recipe required, and it takes great and best of all, it tastes like breakfast.
- Watch your intake of sweets. While fruit with yogurt and a little stevia for sweetening is delicious, limit yourself to one small portion a day (or less) of this kind of thing. It's easy to fall into old habits if you get too used to sweet foods and start pushing out the vegetables you need to keep your body chemistry healthy.
- Invest in some good candida diet cookbooks. Sometimes you are going to want to cook. While it's easy and terrific to be able to steam a pot of lovely vegetables and have them with broiled meat and a sprinkle of organic brown rice, everyone needs a little variety now and then. A cookbook will direct you towards healthy splurges instead of unhealthy ones, and it will give you're an outlet for healthy hunger pangs when the urge strikes. You don't have to stop cooking altogether. You just have to cook different things in a healthier way.
